Report Description

Summary of Major Findings

The $2.6 billion (manufacturers’ dollars) U.S. solar industry has experienced strong growth over the past five years. Demand soared due to improved photovoltaic technologies and lower prices; sharp increases in competing energy costs, and the expansion of government and financial incentives. This resulted in a 55.0% industry compound annual growth rate. The sharpest gains in industry sales were made to commercial and government building owners and electric utilities, while competitors increased sourcing from foreign plants. Currently, demand has leveled off due to the recession and credit crisis. This caused sharply lower PV prices as material costs dropped and competitive pressures intensified. It also adversely impacted solar industry manufacturer profit margins. Lower PV prices, however, is making solar energy more competitive with purchased electricity, especially in high energy cost states such as California and New Jersey. Lower prices will also stimulate future growth as the economy rebounds and government requirements cause consumers to turn to renewable energy sources.

The fact is that the cost of energy keeps rising, and alone is forcing people to look the other direction for cheaper alternatives to energy. Solar energy has been one of the alternatives that people have found to have cheaper energy. Solar energy offers one more than one advantage, but it also has its limitations.

Solar energy is controlling the sun to create energy. The sun is a renewable source of energy. It is available to everybody around the world, and through research people have found a way to capture the energy of the sun and put it to use.

To use solar energy, one has to find a way to capture energy. This is where solar panels come in. Solar panels collect the energy of the sun. That energy that is collected may be converted to power or it may be stored and used later.

If you are collecting the sun’s energy, it is important that you have a storage unit. The reason being is that the sun is not around on rainy days to produce energy for those that require and depend on it. At night and also on cloudy days, the sun and also its power are not always available. In order to have an effective and efficient energy unit it is important that there is a way that the energy that it collects is stored and not used immediately, but may be used later.

The Role of solar energy

Renewable Energy Will Phase out Coal

During the EcoGen conference in Brisbane earlier a couple of months ago, Kobad Bhavnagri from Bloomberg New Energy Finance said that renewable energy is already cheaper than coal in many regions, and that both wind and solar energy are staring to dominate energy production in countries where the conditions are favorable for these two renewable energy options.

He also said that Australia will rely more heavily on solar energy technology than wind farms because of various factors, including the quality of current wind farm projects, and the naturally favourable conditions which are isolated in certain parts of the country. Despite that Australia still has the ability to increase its wind energy capacity by 20% in a few years from now.

Mr Bhavnagri stressed that solar has greater growth potential though, with it being likely the country can increase its solar energy capacity to 5 GW by the year 2020. Plus an additional 2 GW could come from solar thermal technology if the funds from the price on carbon are be used to increase the bankability of large scale solar projects, and consistent policies are legislated to help boost investor confidence in renewable energy.

asked:

What is the main motivation behind using solar energy?

Indeed, thousands of people are intrigued by the idea of using solar energy to reduce the carbon footprint left back in the environment. But, like many others all around the world, you are not sure whether you know all solar energy advantages and disadvantages.

If you find yourself stuck in this situation, then this is the article you are looking for. Therefore, I do advise you to dive into the information mentioned here to be able to stay away from any undesired results.

How does solar energy work for homes?

Now, before we discuss the main benefits and drawbacks of solar energy, one has to quickly understand how solar power works for homes. First of all, you will need to have a set up, which involves solar roof shingles, inverters, batteries, and wiring. When all are in place, solar roof tiles absorb the heat from sunlight and convert it to home solar power.

So, what are the advantages of solar energy?

Indeed, the greatest benefit is that you will not be adding to pollution, which is one of the greatest current threats to our environment. Specifically, you do not need to worry about environmental problems, e.g. carbon dioxide emission and global warming, when you opt for utilizing solar energy.

Well, what would be the second great benefit?

In fact, another advantage of solar energy is that it is being obtained from a renewable source. Can you ever think of the Sun getting extinguished or sunlight getting depleted like the level of fossil fuels in the world today?

Well, this condition is not going to come up for thousands of years. Therefore, we can utilize solar energy for working all the warming and electrical devices at home with no culpability of leaving nothing for the forthcoming decades.

Does solar energy offer a good effect on the economy?

Thinking about the existing down economy, an additional aspect of solar energy is that you can decrease the price of your power bills. Consequently, this can make you significantly richer each month.

And now, what are the drawbacks?

The principle problem is that solar roof tiles can create energy only any time there is sufficient amount of sunlight. Quite simply, throughout days when the sky is cloudy and at evening times, solar energy can not be originated.

How can one overcome this drawback?

To be able to keep away from this challenge, you will have to go for photo voltaic roof shingles. They will not only generate solar energy, but also store them in the photo voltaic cells. Consequently, you can still use this form of clean energy even if the sky is cloudy.

Is it an ideal solution?

To be honest with you, there is no ideal solution for a problem. Indeed, in case you are willing to enjoy additional benefits, then you will have to pay for this accordingly. In other words, the last option is a good one, but it is relatively expensive.

And now, it should be clear for you what the message about solar power advantages and disadvantages is. Though the involved drawbacks, I would recommend it for you to go for using this clean kind of energy. It does not only save money for you, but it offers a better environment for the future generations.

Solar Energy – Basic Principles

0
asked:

This article will describe how solar energy is created and cover some of its basic principles.

Solar energy is created by light and heat which is emitted by the sun, in the form of electromagnetic radiation.

With today’s technology, we are able to capture this radiation and turn it into usable forms of solar energy – such as heating or electricity.

Although one could go into technical dissertations on the subject of electromagnetic radiation, how it is converted into solar energy, and the exact qualities of its electromagnetic rays, this is not something the average person needs or wants to know.

But in order to be able to benefit from the use of solar energy, there are a few facts you should know. Knowing these facts can assist you to make a sound decisions, when looking at the use of solar power as a clean energy source for your home, RV, or whatever the case may be.

Available Solar Resource

The technical feasibility and economical viability of using solar energy depends on the amount of available sunlight (solar radiation) in the area where you intend to place solar heaters or solar panels.

This is sometimes referred to as the available solar resource.

Every part of Earth is provided with sunlight during at least one part of the year. (I say “part of the year” as the north and south polar caps are each in total darkness for a few months of the year.) The amount of sunlight available is one factor to take into account when considering using solar energy.

There are a few other factors, however, which need to be looked at when determining the viability of solar energy in any given location. These are as follows:

Geographic location Time of day Season Local landscape Local weather

Because the Earth is round, the sun hits its surface at different angles, at different locations on the globe. This ranges from 0º (just above the horizon – a good example of this is the north pole during the winter) to 90º (directly overhead, at and near the equator).

SOLAR ENERGY

by

Farooq Raza Qadri

Today in Pakistan we are facing shortage of almost every basic need of life like water, gas, and especially electricity. It is the worst conditions we are facing now a days. The reason for that is…well we all know “THE REASONS” don’t we!!! Few days back I was reading an article in a local newspaper which was about getting electricity like many European countries which is from “Wind Turbines”. It’s a very good idea and we must have to think other ways of energy to meet our needs. Another idea which I’m going to discuss here is “SOLAR ENERGY”.  As we all know that summer season is longer than winter in Pakistan. So it means we can get more and more sunlight. In my view Solar Energy Systems will be more successful in Pakistan than any European country because thankfully we can have more sunlight than Europe. Many scientists and engineers from all over the world are working in this field. Some say that it’ll be very costly, YES it’ll be but only in start as like everything when it’s new its price is high but when the competition arises then prices goes down its simple economics. We’ve used the Sun for drying clothes and food for thousands of years, but only recently have we been able to use it for generating power. The Sun is 150 million Kilometers away, and amazingly powerful. Just the tiny fraction of the Sun’s energy that hits the Earth (around a hundredth of a millionth of a percent) is enough to meet all our power needs many times over. In fact, every minute, enough energy arrives at the Earth to meet our demands for a whole year – if only we could harness it properly and preserve it.

Here are some techniques that are being used in many parts of the world to get energy from the sun light.
